Abstract

The study explored the role of religious bodies in plant maintenance for implementing UBE
programmes in Nigeria. Specifically, the study examined the extent of the role of the religious
bodies in the UBE Programme for plant maintenance in junior public secondary schools in
Kogi State: one research question and a hypothesis guided the study. A descriptive research
survey design and quantitative approach were used. Religious Leaders Involvement in Plant
Maintenance (RLIPM) served as an instrument. A sample of 387 UBE principals consisting of
191 (49%) urban and 196 (51%) rural was selected using the proportionate stratified sampling
technique. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the research question and z-test
statistics tested the hypothesis at the 0.05 significance level. The descriptive analysis revealed
that the religious bodies were poorly involved in plant maintenance and in implementing the
UBE programmes efficiently and effectively at public junior secondary schools in Kogi State.
