Abstract

Background: Pediatric sepsis is a life-threatening syndrome caused by a dysregulated host response to infection and remains a major contributor to childhood mortality, organ dysfunction, and long-term disability worldwide. For many years, pediatric sepsis was defined using systemic inflammatory response syndrome–based criteria, although these criteria showed limited specificity, inconsistent bedside application, and inadequate discrimination of children at greatest risk of death. The Phoenix Sepsis Criteria were introduced to provide an evidence-based,  globally applicable definition centered on infection-associated organ dysfunction.
