Abstract

Indian medicinal plants are found to be good sources of bioactive compounds in the form of polyphenols and alkaloids, which contain strong antimicrobial activity. The phytochemicals are reported to play important roles in countering bacterial, fungal, and viral infections through microbial cell wall targeting, interruption of enzyme processes, and preventing biofilm production. The rising global interest in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has led to increased studies of natural substitutes, and polyphenols and alkaloids are showing great promise as new antimicrobial drugs.
