Abstract

Virginity testing, a deeply engrained and debated practice in India, comprises the physical examination of women to evaluate their virgin status, often leading to severe psychological and emotional trauma. This paper explores the historical, cultural, and societal factors that prolong virginity testing, highlighting its implications on women’s mental health. Despite being widely criticized for its lack of scientific validity and ethical concerns, the practice continues to be normalized in certain communities under the guise of preserving social honor and tradition.
