BABY WEARING EXPERIENCE. A QUALITATIVE STUDY
Keywords:
baby wearing, ergonomics, qualitative research.Abstract
Objective: the purpose of the present study was to explore the experience of baby wearing in mothers to ex-tract the meaning they give to it. Material and method: a qualitative phenomenological study was carried out from an interpretive paradigm. A theoretical sampling was carried out to select the participants until reaching data saturation. The data were transcribed, encoded and analyzed using triangulation techniques. Results: thirteen mothers participated in the study. The findings of this study showed that, despite the different previous conceptions about baby wearing, all the participants started with contradictory feelings, leading to a positive evolution. The benefits they expressed were bonding, lactation, sleep, health and psychological development, leisure and day-to-day activities and management of the two children. The perceived barriers were negative factors, criticism of the environment, lack of information and/or difficulty in finding it, and the economic cost of baby wearing. All the participants summarized baby wearing as a positive and recommended practice. Conclusions: baby wearing was described as a comfortable practice, safe and/or protective. It was also described as a method that allows bonding and closeness with their children. The practice was positive and recommended by all participants. In addition, the participants encouraged and recommended baby wearing to other people.
