Abstract

Introduction: whole body vibration (WBV) is used to optimize the neuromuscular system in patients with brain da-mage sequelae. The objective is to review the current scientific literature to identify the effects of WBV on cerebrovascular disease. Material and method: databases MEDLINE, ISI WEB OF SCIENCE, SCOPUS, SPORTDiscus,PEDro and Cochrane Library were reviewed. The descriptors used were "stroke", "hemiplegia", "vibration" and "vibration training". The inclusion criteria were studies that are randomized, or quasi-experimental controlled trials aimed at people with sequelae of stroke to whom WBV was applied and whose results were measured by standardized test pre-post intervention. 9 items were included for review. Results: mixed results regarding the effect of WBV on balance and mobility were obtained. Muscle strength and functional capacity (walking, activities of daily living) only im-proved in patients with acute stroke. Conclusions: not is possible to state that WBV improves the physical and functional capabilities of individuals who have suffered strokes. However, they found benefits of its application especially in subjects with acute stroke. Future research concerning the subject would be necessary.
