Abstract

Background: Acute variceal hemorrhage is a major decompensating event in cirrhosis and remains associated with substantial morbidity, early rebleeding, organ failure, and mortality. Beyond the immediate consequences of blood loss and hemodynamic instability, gastrointestinal bleeding markedly increases the intestinal nitrogen load, enhances ammonia production, promotes systemic inflammation, and may precipitate hepatic encephalopathy.
