Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus increases susceptibility to urinary tract infection (UTI), but the excess risk is not explained by hyperglycemia alone. Immune dysfunction, glycosuria, autonomic bladder dysfunction, vascular and renal disease, instrumentation, and repeated antimicrobial exposure interact with uropathogen virulence to produce a broad clinical spectrum
