Abstract

Background: Demonstration of the myoepithelial cell layer is central to separating benign and in-situ breast proliferations from invasive carcinoma. Conventional markers are valuable but imperfect because staining may be attenuated in ductal carcinoma in situ, duplicated by tumor cells, or obscured by stromal and vascular cross-reactivity. DOG1, the immunohistochemical surrogate of the calcium-activated chloride channel ANO1/TMEM16A, has emerged as a complementary breast myoepithelial marker.
