Abstract

Background: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is characterized by marked clinical heterogeneity, ranging from indolent disease that may never require treatment to rapidly progressive leukemia associated with early therapeutic intervention and shortened survival. Although established prognostic systems incorporate clinical stage, age, serum beta-2 microglobulin, immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable-region mutational status, and TP53 abnormalities, access to molecular and cytogenetic testing remains unequal across healthcare settings.
