Abstract

Background: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is associated with a markedly increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and cardiovascular death. The combined effects of chronic hyperglycemia and impaired renal function promote endothelial injury, inflammation, oxidative stress, vascular calcification, and accelerated atherosclerosis. Consequently, patients with DKD frequentlydevelop more complex and widespread coronary disease and experience less favorable cardiovascular outcomes than individuals without renalinvolvement.
