Background: Oxcarbazepine (OXC) is a second-generation antiseizure medication widely prescribed for the management of epilepsy and other neurological disorders in women of reproductive age. Although OXC is generally considered to possess a more favorable teratogenic profile than several older antiseizure medications, increasing experimental evidence has raised concerns regarding its potential influence on fetal brain development. The hippocampus and cerebral cortex are among the most complex and vulnerable regions of the developing central nervous system, undergoing tightly regulated processes of neurogenesis, neuronal migration, differentiation, synaptogenesis, and programmed cell death throughout embryonic and fetal life. Any disruption of these events during critical developmental windows may result in persistent structural and functional abnormalities with long-term neurodevelopmental consequences.
