Approximately 6% to 20% of premenopausal women are affected with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), making it one of the most common endocrine disorders in reproductive-age women. Among the three types of stress responsive proteins that have persisted through evolution, Sestrin2 (SESN2) is present in the vast majority of vertebrates. Sestrin2, a recently discovered protein that is induced by a variety of stress conditions such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and DNA damage, is involved in the control of many vital cellular functions.
