Assessment of Knowledge of Obstetrics Danger Signs Among Pregnant Women Receiving Antenatal Care in Health Care Facilities in Enugu State, Nigeria

Background: Obstetrics danger signs indicate an immediate hazard which, if not avoided, will result in
serious injury.The study investigated knowledge towards obstetrics danger signs among pregnant women
receiving antenatal care in health care facilities.
Methods: Cross-sectional survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study
consisted of 3940 pregnant women receiving antenatal care in Nsukka Health Centre, Bishop Shanahan
Hospital and General Hospital Nsukka. The sample for the study comprised of 380 pregnant women
drawn using multi-stage sampling procedure. The instrument used for data collection was a researcherdesigned questionnaire titled Knowledge of Obstetric Danger Signs Questionnaire (KODSQ). The
instrument was validated by three experts from the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education.
Split-half method was used to test the reliability of the instrument. Frequencies and percentages were
used to answer the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested using Chi-square test of
independence at 0.5 level of significance.
