Evaluation of Neuroprotective Effects of Plant-Derived Alkaloids in Animal Models of Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline,
accumulation of amyloid-beta plaques, tau hyperphosphorylation, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and
cholinergic dysfunction. Current treatments provide only symptomatic relief, necessitating the exploration of
alternative therapeutic strategies. This study investigates the neuroprotective effects of plant-derived alkaloids
in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, evaluating their impact on cognitive function, biochemical markers,
and histopathological alterations. The selected alkaloids, including Galantamine, Berberine, Huperzine A, and
Nicotine, were administered in transgenic and chemically induced models of Alzheimer’s Disease. Behavioral
assessments such as the Morris Water Maze, Y-Maze, and Novel Object Recognition test were conducted to
evaluate cognitive performance. Biochemical analyses measured oxidative stress markers, including
malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione, along with neuroinflammatory markers such as
tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and nuclear factor kappa B. Cholinergic function was assessed by
measuring acetylcholinesterase and choline acetyltransferase enzyme activity.
